Understanding the Timeline: How Long Does it Take for CBD to Work for Fibromyalgia?
Introduction to CBD and Fibromyalgia
In the complex world of wellness and healthcare, CBD (cannabidiol) has emerged as a beacon of hope for many. Particularly, individuals battling fibromyalgia have found solace in the hope of a therapeutic potential of this plant-derived molecule. As we delve into this topic in terms of how to get the best results, what to avoid and explain the issues around making medical claims regarding CBD. Then finally we'll explore the question: how long does it take for CBD to work for fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia, a chronic disorder characterised by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and tenderness in localised areas, has been a medical enigma for years. With no known cure, treatment primarily focuses on managing symptoms to ensure that the patients can maintain a better quality of life by anticipating symptoms, managing physical output where possible. Recently, CBD has garnered attention for its potential in easing the discomfort associated with fibromyalgia, and as such there are no studies looking into CBD and medical cannabis with regarding to treating/ managing fibromyalgia symptoms.
Understanding Fibromyalgia: Symptoms and Triggers
Understanding fibromyalgia is essential in appreciating the impact of CBD. Symptoms often include constant dull pain, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties, often referred to as "fibro fog". Triggers vary widely among individuals, but they can include physical or psychological stress, surgery, and infection. Many find that over doing it one day can have a knock on effect with a 'flare up' taking them out for a day or two afterwards, where as others have their flare ups more sporadically. For me personally, I can minimise the day to day impact by stopping myself from 'over doing it' with my new found limitations, and treating the remaining symptoms directly as they come.
The exact cause of fibromyalgia remains unknown, but experts believe it involves a variety of genetic and environmental factors. One theory suggests that fibromyalgia patients have a lower threshold for pain due to an increased sensitivity in the brain to pain signals, however whether this is true is another question, as I for one seem to have a relatively high pain tolerance with most things, so it doesn't correlate in my case, but that isn't to say this isn't true for others.
What is CBD? A Brief Overview
CBD is a natural compound found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. Unlike its cousin, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is not psychoactive in the way that most people associate with the 'high' of cannabis, meaning it won't get you high. Over the past few years, CBD has skyrocketed in popularity, owing to word of mouth about its potential health benefits, however until further studies are done, we can't discuss any specific medical benefits including pain relief and reduced anxiety.
CBD works by interacting with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex cell-signalling system involved in regulating sleep, mood, appetite, and pain. This is the cornerstone for why people believe CBD has the potential for benefiting those with fibro, as it could in theory help restore balance in the way things are being regulated. These potential therapeutic benefits of CBD have sparked interest in its potential for managing fibromyalgia symptoms and multiple studies in the UK are underway looking into this further.
The Role of CBD in Treating Fibromyalgia
CBD's impact on fibromyalgia is initially promising. By interacting with the body's ECS, the hypothesis is that CBD may help reduce pain and inflammation, common symptoms in fibromyalgia patients. Additionally, CBD may also have neuro protective properties by aiding with a healthier sleep routine potentially helping with the cognitive difficulties associated with fibromyalgia.
It's important to note that while CBD shows promise, more research is needed. Current evidence is largely anecdotal, and a lack of regulation in the CBD industry means products can vary in quality and efficacy. So it's important to pick products that are produced by a reputable brand, who not only test their products for potency, but also for heavy metals/ pesticides and other nasties you don't want to be adding into the mix! Although we always advise comparing brands, we developed our range of products using direct feedback from local fibromyalgia patients from a support group, if you'd like to check them out, you can see them HERE. Furthermore, if you want to hear their experience, and other tips about how to manage fibromyalgia, the group leader was generous enough to do an interview with us, which you can read HERE.
How Long Does it Take for CBD to Work for Fibromyalgia?
Now, to answer the question: how long does it take for CBD to work for fibromyalgia? This depends on several factors, including the dosage, the method of administration, and individual body chemistry. Generally, most people experience effects within 30 minutes to 2 hours. However, regular, sustained use is often necessary for managing chronic conditions like fibromyalgia. So let's jump in for a little more detail.
Firstly, how you take CBD makes a big difference to it's effects, and fast it onsets. For example, if you take CBD Oil, drop your dose onto food/ or into a tea/ coffee and drink it directly or take capsules. Most of that CBD will be absorbed within 40-90 minutes via you liver, and remain in your system effectively for 4-6 hours. However, if you were to hold the drops under your tongue for 90 seconds before swallowing, now a lot of that CBD will be absorbed 'sublingually', making it's way into your system much quicker, with onset being anywhere from 5-15 minutes.
So depending on your needs in terms of onset time, and preference of taste, you can choose a method that suits you. Beyond this, topical CBD products that are rubbed into targeted areas work in a different way by being absorbed specifically where you need relief. So in order to get the best out of these products, you want to apply these as and when you need them, and for better results, these should be used alongside a baseline of CBD Oil or CBD Capsules.
So with all of that said, how long it initially works will depend on your method, however, for more serious conditions like fibromyalgia, you may need a stronger dose than most, and you may not notice effects on your first couple of doses whilst it builds up in your system. So when we are asked how long does it take for CBD to work for fibromyalgia, we typically advise a process of 2-4 weeks. For some, you will find it much sooner, even as soon as 2-3 days, but on average 7-10 days is how long it takes for our customers to find the right balance of dosage strength and timing.
Consistency is key when using CBD for fibromyalgia, so we always recommend taking 2-3 doses a day for 7 - 10 days as advised before considering increasing your dose if needed. These doses are for CBD Drops/ Capsules. Then alongside this, use a targeted CBD Topical such as this CBD Muscle Salve to apply to troubled areas as and when you need it. After that 7-10 days, you'll be in a position to assess the best dosage schedule for you, and if so increase slightly in three day intervals until you find your sweet spot.
This method not only means that you are ensuring you get the best out of your products to find if they can be effective for you, but by increasing slowly, you'll be able to find the most effective dosage for you without over doing it, in turn making your routine as cost effective as possible!
Factors Affecting the Efficacy of CBD for Fibromyalgia
The efficacy of CBD for fibromyalgia can depend on multiple factors. The type of product, the method of consumption, and the dosage can greatly affect how quickly and effectively CBD works. Individual factors, like body weight, metabolism rate, and the severity of symptoms, can also impact CBD's effectiveness. However, we've been open now since 2018 and have had thousands of customers come through our doors and online, so it's easy to step back and see that the most important factor to efficacy is consistency and time. CBD isn't a strong painkiller that's going to slap you across the face on onset. Using CBD for managing fibromyalgia is about understanding finding balance between what it can do for you, and using that as a stepping stone to improve other aspects of your health that also effect fibro. For example by managing to gain enough relief to get a healthier nights sleep, in turn helping your body recover from another flare up day, or perhaps helping managing your down time with calm, so that your mind isn't racing as much in turn making your 'fibro fog' worse. So we would always advise taking your time to find the right dosage for you slowly, and consistently to give CBD the best go.
It's always advised to consult with a healthcare provider before starting CBD, especially for those with chronic conditions like fibromyalgia. They can provide guidance on dosage and product selection, ensuring you find the best CBD oil for fibromyalgia.
Best CBD Oil for Fibromyalgia: What to Look For
When choosing the best CBD oil for fibromyalgia, consider factors like the type of CBD (full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, or CBD isolate), the extraction method, and the concentration of CBD. Always opt for products that have been third-party tested to ensure quality and potency, and remember that you want to get a strength that is strong enough to give you a consistent dose for 2-3 weeks for a real test as to where it's going to help. By far our two most popular strengths for this are the 10% 1,000mg CBD drops, and the 20% 2,000mg CBD drops coupled with either a CBD Roll on, or our CBD Muscle Salve.
Remember to consider the method of delivery. CBD oils and tinctures are popular due to their quick absorption, however counting drops for dosage or the taste isn't for everyone. Particularly if you're finding fibro fog particularly bad in the morning so you don't want to have to think about how many drops to take. So perhaps in this instance opting for a CBD Oil Capsule is a better option, as it's in a familiar format to other tablets. Other products like CBD muscle balm or CBD roll on can also provide targeted relief on the go as and when you need it. Most of our customers report having to use less of their topicals when combined with drops/ capsules, but an overall vast improvement when using them combined compared to individually.
