Huala AMS T24 (Alien Mints) — Medical Cannabis Strain Review UK
A new (ish) strain from Curaleaf at only £4.20 per gram! I must admit I didn't have my hopes up high at this price point, but I was pleasantly surprised!
Alien Mints comes in at 24%, and for me is a brilliant day time strain whilst managing my day to day symptoms. With new budget strains come in and prices coming down, it's understandable to assume that they won't be of the best quality. But for the price i'm incredibly happy with this strain, i'll break down why below!

Introduction

We are starting to see sub £5 strains pop up on medical cannabis in the UK which is exciting considering the cost of medical cannabis in general. When I first joined, my first prescription was £13.75 per gram. So to think how far it has come to have £4.20 strains available is pretty impressive.
That being said, even with strains with high prices you're not always going to get the best quality. If you're a medical patient, you'll already likely know how much these can vary. Whether it's that classic stale hay smell, overly crisp buds, or a big jump in quality from batch to batch.
So it's understandable why many assume these budget strains aren't going to be that great. The thing is, when this strain first popped up and started getting prescribed, the reactions weren't what I expected them to be...
- Despite the main reddit boards often being overly critical of the flower, I actually saw a lot of positive reviews starting to come through for this strain despite it's price point.
- Both terpene preservation, trim and cure had been mentioned at being alright and better than some strains that are double the price on the formulary.
- Appearance, taste and smell exceeded expectations whilst understanding better premium strains are available, it was clear that this strain impressed for the considerably low price.
- It seemed to be consistent from batch to batch.

So it was hard to ignore at this point, as I admit I had also assumed the worst when I first saw the price. So on my next re up, I decided to take a punt and see what this strain was like.
Spoiler alert, my experience matched that of what i'd seen online. This is a great strain, very effective for my needs, and though it could be better on terps/ cure, compared to a lot of medical it stands it's ground very well. Below i'll get into the little details that sets this apart!

Batch
Consistency
The batch performs evenly from the first bud to the last, with dense, well-trimmed flowers that break up the same way every time. Trim is clean and close, so there is no leaf to pick through and the weight you pay for is mostly flower. Quality holds across the bag rather than tapering off at the bottom, which means the patient gets the same experience on day one and on the final gram. Though bud sized varied from medium/ small up to large, the effects and consistency across all of them remained the same.
I have only had a few bags from the same batch so far. If I experience fluctuations in consistency I will return to update this.
Initial observation upon opening
I was immediately met with large glistening nugs sat atop a nice range of medium and small sized flower. All looking well trimmed, and consistent in formation.
The initial smell was complex, and thankfully void of any classic stale hay smells but a complex and deep tone very familiar if you've haf similar genetics in the past.
Shake content is very low. Tipping the pot out over white paper leaves only a light dusting of trichomes and a few broken calyxes, so the weight you paid for is flower rather than crumbs with the bags i've had so far.
Packaging type & accessibility
I've decided to introduce this category to our medical strain reviews this year. With more and more producers and updating packaging from previous brands coming out, we have been getting feedback about some of the pesky child safety precautions.
Since we've introduced this i've had a few messages/ emails saying how handy this has been. So i'm glad to see it's been a useful point to include.
Now let me start off with the fact that having these features is important for the obvious child safety reasons! However, for some patients with dexterity issues, or those who may struggle when needing a dose quickly, these can become a bit of a hurdle to accessibility. So I thought I would include which type of mechanism each strain uses. Obviously they could swap packaging out on future batches but for the most part i'm guessing they'll be quite consistent.
So if these are issues for you it'll hopefully help you avoid anything you find troublesome.

What type of safety feature does it have?
In the case of Huala AMS T24 Alien Mints, it has one of the easier bags to open. Inside the lip of the bag you will have to seperate the sides of the openning to grip them and then proceed open like you would any other bag. If you don't catch the internal lip to open it with, then it will remain closed for child safety features. One you know, this is an easy mechanism for those with dexterity issues to navigate.
Of all of the mechanisms I find this the most accessible as the tab is easy to grab, and from there it's a pretty standard process to open it up.
One downside to their packaging that I will raise, is the fact that this arrives in a box with the prescription label fixed to the outside. Those who have read my previous reviews will have heard my frustrations about these already. As patients, we have to carry our prescription in it's original packaging with the label fixed. It's one thing bringing a mylar bag with the label on. It's an entirely different thing to carry a flimsy box, that doesn't hold up well when placed in a bag, and serves no practical purpose. I have spoken to countless patients who have been frustrated by this, and impacted personally. Especially when travelling with multiple strains.
For the sake of them applying the label to the internal bag rather than the box, it could have a significant impact to the patients use. It's a shame to see this practice still in place after all of this time when the box itself serves no purpose to justify this additional problem it creates.
Improvement after storage and curing
Straight out of the pot the aroma is pleasant but with some room for improvement. 3/4 days in a glass jar with a 62% humidity pack, burped once a day, and the terpenes open up noticeably with some of the more delicate notes becoming more apparent.
Texture improves too. Buds that were slightly crisp at the edges come back to a soft, spongy feel, and the grind stops crumbling into dust. If you can leave it a fortnight before you start, it is worth the wait.

Effects
The first ten minutes are mostly in the head — a light, clear lift that does not tip into raciness. Conversation stays easy and focus holds, which makes it a reasonable daytime choice if you have things to get through. However, for pain patients like myself, don't let this make you think it can't carry it's weight in the evening. At the right dose and temps, these strain can punch similarly to 30% strains, something I wasn't expecting.
I have been on similar strains for the past few months, and very much used to more of a couch lock leaning strain. However Alien Mints has managed to maintain the effectiveness of an evening strain, without clouding things too much for me to be productive in the day.
Having this in rotation with other strains opens things up to be able to really dial things in depending on what I need to do at the time, and how much my symptoms are acting up in that moment.
Splitting the nug and under the scope
Openning the buds by hand shows a clean interior with no mould, no grey patches and no seed pockets. The stem snaps rather than bends, which is what you want from a finished cure and its crisp terpene profile presents itself in all it's glory once opened.

Under a 30x loupe the trichome heads are mostly intact and cloudy with a scattering of amber, which lines up with the balanced feel in the Effects block. Externally it's a little mixed but this is typical for this type of trim.
Calyx-to-leaf ratio is high. There is little to nothing to pick out before grinding, which is the main reason the shake content stays as low as it does.
How does it grind
Before seeing this strain in person, my bias about the price assumed this would crumble and dust easily in the grinder due to being over dried, and perhaps a little old. However I couldn't have been more wrong.
This strain grinds beautifully, leaving an even springy grind that you can really dial in without worrying about it getting too fine (unless that's what you like).
The terpenes really start to shine in the grinder, and the internal cure shows itself as the flower wiggles and releases when you lift the lid off. This improved even more after a couple of days in a curing jar.
In a vaporiser it heats cleanly and lasts a full session at 180°C before the flavour turns. There is no harsh spike at the end, and the chamber empties without leaving a sticky residue behind.

Batch number
The batch code is printed on the base of the tub and matches the label on the lid, which is the first thing to check when a parcel arrives. Ours reads BN: CURA00200252, with an expiry date of EXP:15/12/2026
Patient information link from packaging: https://curaleafformulary.com/f-p/443eed73-432f-4c38-a37b-721d0ba77973/gbr/
Pro Tip: Keep the tub and the code until you have finished it. If anything about the flower seems off, that number is what the clinic and producer needs to trace the batch.
Throat issues and allergies
I have seasonal allergies, dust allergies, and have found myself to have the odd reaction to certain strains. One of the reasons i'm prescribed is related to a brain condition that is impacted by coughing/ sneezing. Having had a couple of brain operations, as you can imagine, excessive coughing or sneezing can cause pressure and problems for me.
With that said, I now take a note of strains that may cause throat irritation or reactions that can put me at risk of increasing coughing/ sneezing. Having had feedback from others concious of these things also, I decided to include it in my reviews. Though I appreciate everyones allergies/ triggers may be different, I figured every bit of data can help incase it is something you're concious of.
With Huala Alien Mints, I experienced no sneezing or itchy eyes here, but that is one person's experience and not a guarantee. If you react to pollen or to certain plant families, start with a very small amount and see how you get on.
Side effects
At a low dose there is very little to report — a dry mouth, mostly, and that passes with a glass of water. Though I have noted that a stronger dose in the daytime after my coffee can make me feel slightly peppy. Not long lasting, but something i've noticed likely due to the contrast to recent strains being more indica leaning.
Having said this, I had no racing heart, no anxiety spike, which is not always the case with a head-forward strain.
Pushing the dose during heightened symptoms leads to the productivity side of things having diminishing returns. Though this is to be expected. It's not to say that you can't use it as a day time strain, but to be cautious during high pain days that using additional doses may well impact this. However, chances are if you're having a bad flare up day, this would be the case anyway. So being able to use this to function better outweighs those issues for me personally.
Despite having some day time leaning effects, it still carries it's weight well in the evening for my break through pains.

Overall impression
Colour me impressed. Hand in the air I left my bias lead the way at first with this strain assuming the worst due to the price point. I am not afraid to admit when I am wrong.
Don't let me get ahead of myself here though, this isn't the best medical strain i've experienced, but the fact is it sits amongst them very well considering the price.
My other strains on my prescription range from £75-£85 per 10g on average. Many of which aren't cured as well, or as uniform. Yet with this strain I can get 20g for less than one of my average 10g prescriptions. This difference is no joke, especially considering the cost of living these days.
It is not the loudest strain on the shelf, but it's by far not the quietest either. I have had plenty of strains a lot more expensive than this which were terrible. Old hay like terpene profiles, bad trims, excessive shake, or just smalls present in the bag despite not being sold as such. It's easy to moan about medical with the quality sometimes, but this is not one of those strains.
Medically this is a great strain for me, which ultimately is what matters first and foremost even if it's not the prettiest strain. However, in this case it's not half bad. The uniform cure and trim makes this strain have a great bag appeal, whilst also meaning that each nug delivered similar taste, vapour and effects.
Ultimately we are at a turning point in medical cannabis here in the UK with price competition starting to take hold. We are now seeing more budget strains in this price range appearing, and Huala Alien Mints has done a great job at setting the bar quality on a budget. I'm looking forward to seeing what else can come out of this price bracket and from Huala in the future.

Two weeks in the jar did more for this flower than any grinder or vape setting — the terpenes came forward and the texture softened right up.
